We focus our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.
The Downtown YMCA is dedicated to improving the quality of human life by helping all people realize their fullest potential as children of God through the development of spirit, mind & body. We do this by providing innovative programs both in and out of our facility. Read below to see how we reach out to our community:
“I am so grateful for the opportunity to belong to the YMCA. Being a member of the Y has helped me to improves my mood, helps me manage my anxiety and helps me feel strong and empowered.” Martin—34 years old
It is the policy of the Downtown YMCA that no person is denied membership by reason of inability to pay fees. Our financial aid program, allows low income adults and seniors, as well as those in recovery programs, the ability to enjoy the benefits of being a member of the YMCA.
“The exercise has made it possible for me to have better movement in joints with less pain.” Patricia—72 years old
Our free Fitness For Life Classes provide a chance for seniors to maintain an active lifestyle in a friendly and supportive environment, as well as offering a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other seniors in the community. A mix of exercises are used to enhance mobility, muscle strength and daily physical functioning. Seniors find that they are able to move easier and experience less pain.
“It’s my first year (at camp). I can’t wait to come back, it’s super awesome! My favorite part is was setting goals for the year. My goal is to be able to overcome any obstacle, overcome any hardships, so it will make me stronger spiritually.” Elijah—12 years old
Confidence, skills, character, friends & fun … what's not to love about, and learn from, camp? With your gift, children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend will enjoy sports, science, special events, field trips and enrichment programs.
A YMCA Camp Marston experience, made possible through a scholarship, introduced Elijah to a world he'd never imagined while growing up in an urban community. YMCA camp counselors teach life-transforming character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Give a child the opportunity to experience all that Camp Marston has to offer, with a donation to our Annual Support Campaign.
“Through Y&G, I have learned to be a better speaker and that being a part of something this big is the best of both worlds. Meeting students from all over California has been a rewarding and learning experience for me.” Derek—11th grade
YMCA Youth & Government encourages students to develop leadership skills and self-confidence to last a lifetime. While working throughout the year as jurists, attorneys, legislators and members of the press corps, students emerge as confident peer role models and young leaders at the annual model government session at the State Capitol.
“When I was told I had to get tutored I didn’t want to do it that much. But now I want to because there are really good books & I learned more than I expected!” Maria—3rd Grade
The Downtown YMCA aspires to make an appreciable difference in the literacy skills of children who struggle with reading. We provide opportunities for guided reading practice with a caring individual, which fosters an enjoyment of reading, and enhances the motivation and self-esteem of at-risk children.
If you would like to help teach kids like Maria how to read please visit our volunteer opportunities.
