SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We focus our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.

Emily’s Story

For recently unemployed single parent, Emily Shaedler, enrolling her son Maddox in a summer camp seemed unlikely until she reached out to the Downtown YMCA. Referred by a friend, Emily talked to Senior Program Director of Youth and Adult Sports, Michael Greco who explained the ins and outs of the Y’s Financial Aid program. Emily was amazed that Michael, only a few months into the position, was not only knowledgeable, but very warm and personable: “Like most people, we have pride especially when it comes to asking for financial support…Michael didn’t judge us based on our circumstances. He treated us as a priority.”

Michael’s commitment at helping Maddox become part of the YMCA’s Summer Camp Program came at a crucial time for Emily. With summer approaching, she aimed to get Maddox involved in activities outside of home.

Through Financial Aid, Maddox not only had a blast at camp, but his enrollment allowed Emily to learn of his talents: “Maddox is quite the athlete (of course he gets that from his mother)…[YMCA Coaches are] positive male role models in our children’s lives especially Maddox…The joy, love, and support they brought and continue to bring is immeasurable.”

Because of the generous support from YMCA staff and financial contributions from various donors, Emily plans to sign Maddox up for the YMCA’s flag football team in the Fall. Emily is grateful to all who helped let her and Maddox see his potential: “Maddox and his new friends had such an amazing time this summer—he still tells the stories…a huge ‘thank you’ goes to the Downtown YMCA for generously giving families the opportunity to enjoy some of the finer things in a child’s life like summer camp and the opportunities that follow.”
